Short answer: if you own a home in Valrico, the AC bill lands on you. Most homes here are owner-occupied. A yearly tune-up is the cheap way to avoid a nasty surprise. Nationally, a tune-up runs $70 to $200 and a typical repair runs $150 to $650. We couldn't find Valrico prices on Nov 2, 2026, so call those ballpark.

Valrico at a glance

Valrico isn't a city. On the Census map it is a "CDP," short for census-designated place. The Census glossary describes a CDP as a place with a name and a settled population that isn't legally incorporated. The 2020 Census found 37,895 people in Valrico. For 2020-2024, it estimates 14,437 households. About 79.0% of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and the median owner-occupied home is worth $393,700 (Census QuickFacts for Valrico CDP, checked Nov 2, 2026).

Valrico is on our service area list, southwest of Plant City along SR 60. If you own your home, the AC is one of the costliest things you have to keep alive. It pays to look after it.

How often should an AC get a tune-up?

Angi and HomeGuide agree on the basics.

Go find your warranty papers. If they ask for yearly service, hang on to every receipt.

Angi puts the usual life of a central AC at 12 to 17 years. Yours could be closer to the end than you'd guess. Ask the tech how old it is.

What a tune-up covers

HomeGuide says a tune-up takes about an hour, and that what's included varies by company. Its typical list falls into a few groups.

Cleaning and swapping - Clean or replace the air filter - Clean the outdoor coil - Flush the drain line and clean the drain pan - Clean and adjust the blower

Measuring - Watch the system start up and run through a cycle - Check the temperature at the intake and at the vents - Check airflow through the system - Measure the compressor's amps and volts

Inspecting - Capacitors, contactors and wiring - Refrigerant lines and levels - The fan blade - The indoor coil - The disconnect box - Lines and fittings, for leaks or oily residue

It also lists lubricating moving parts and calibrating the thermostat.

What a tune-up usually leaves out

HomeGuide says a tune-up doesn't include:

If a tech finds a problem during the visit, the fix costs extra. That's normal. What you want is a clear price before they start.

HomeGuide says what you pay depends on system size, how easy the unit is to reach, how long it has been since the last service, and the season. It also says a tune-up may cost more if the system hasn't been looked at in years, because there's more dirt to clean.

Is a maintenance plan worth it?

HomeGuide says a plan can make sense if your warranty has run out, or if the maker wants yearly service. Plans usually cover filter changes and tune-ups, and some knock a bit off repairs or parts. They aren't all the same, though. Read the fine print before you sign.

What you can do yourself

Some jobs are fine for a homeowner. Florida's DBPR says changing an A/C filter doesn't take a license. Neither does cleaning ducts if you don't have to take the grills off.

Other jobs are not DIY. HomeGuide warns against leveling the outdoor unit on your own, because moving it can damage the line set and cause leaks. And Florida's DBPR lists central AC installation as work that needs a state contractor's license when it's done for pay, so that's not a job to hand to a neighbor.

Signs you shouldn't wait for spring

Don't sit on these. HomeGuide says to book if the airflow is weak, the house stays muggy, the vents smell musty, you hear new noises, the system keeps turning on and off, or the power bill jumps. A unit that runs all day without cooling counts too. Any of those may mean you need a repair, not just a tune-up.

Is the unit old and the repair quote steep? Our repair or replace guide shows how to run the numbers. For the ducts, see our page on ductwork and air quality.

Picking a company for service

HomeGuide's advice for hiring an AC service company:

It also warns about very cheap tune-ups. In its words, such companies "often charge more than average for repairs or attempt to pressure you into buying a new AC system." That's one writer's warning, not a rule, but it's why a written checklist helps.

Permits and licenses

Valrico is in Hillsborough County, so county rules apply. The county's Development Services number is (813) 272-5600.
