AC Repair or Replace? How to Decide in Plant City, FL

Published Nov 2, 2026 · 11 min read · All HVAC Guides

Short answer: repair your AC if it's fairly young and the fix is small. Replace it if it's old, uses R-22, keeps breaking, or the repair bill is about half the price of a new system. Two quick tests give you a rough answer. Then you check the warranty and get both prices in writing.

This guide gives you four tests, the repair costs other sites publish, and a list of questions to ask. The prices are national ranges, not Plant City quotes. No Plant City or Hillsborough County price list turned up when we looked on Nov 2, 2026.

The 4 tests

Cost guides keep landing on the same rules of thumb. Here are four of them.

Test How it works Who says
Age The system is more than 10 years old HomeGuide says 10 years (repair guide) or 10 to 12 years (replacement guide)
Refrigerant The system uses R-22 HomeGuide
The 50% rule The repair costs at least 50% of a new AC HomeGuide and Fixr
The $5,000 rule Repair cost times the system's age in years is over $5,000 HomeGuide and Fixr

Sources: HomeGuide: AC repair cost (byline Aug 22, 2025), HomeGuide: AC replacement cost (byline Jul 25, 2025), and Fixr: AC repair cost (updated Jan 29, 2026). All checked Nov 2, 2026.

HomeGuide's repair guide also lists frequent repairs as a sign to replace. Fixr says the $5,000 rule is "just a rule of thumb," so talk to a local HVAC tech about your own case.

Try the math yourself

The math below is ours, using the rules above.

Your situation Age times repair cost Over $5,000? What the rule suggests
6-year-old unit, $500 repair 6 x $500 = $3,000 No Repair
9-year-old unit, $600 repair 9 x $600 = $5,400 Yes Leans replace
14-year-old unit, $400 repair 14 x $400 = $5,600 Yes Leans replace
14-year-old unit, $250 repair 14 x $250 = $3,500 No Repair, but watch for more repairs

Now the 50% rule. HomeGuide lists a 3-ton AC at $5,800 to $7,800 installed. Half of that is $2,900 to $3,900. So a $3,000 repair on a 3-ton system sits right on that line. That example uses HomeGuide's national range, not a Plant City quote.

Notice the rules sometimes disagree. A 6-year-old unit with a $2,000 repair would fail the $5,000 test (6 x $2,000 = $12,000), but it's young, and the repair is well under 50% of a new system. That's why you check the warranty first.

Check the warranty first

Before you pay for anything, look at your paperwork. Fixr says many AC systems come with a manufacturer's warranty that covers basic parts for 5 to 10 years, or up to 15 years for extended warranties. It says that if you're still covered, repair costs could be much lower or even $0 when parts and labor are covered. Some installers also give a labor warranty.

Ask the contractor to check your unit's model and serial number against the warranty. That one step can change the whole decision.

What repairs cost

HomeGuide says most AC repairs cost $150 to $650. Larger repairs run $650 to $2,500 or more out of warranty. Technicians charge $75 to $150 an hour for labor alone. Fixr says $250 to $700 for repairs, and says older systems are more likely to need big repairs in the $2,000 to $3,000 range.

Here are HomeGuide's ranges for common jobs.

Repair Cost range
Service call or diagnosis $75 to $200
Capacitor $100 to $250
Contactor $200 to $450
Thermostat $140 to $350
Condenser fan motor $200 to $700
Blower motor $300 to $900
Refrigerant leak repair $200 to $1,500
Compressor $600 to $2,500
Air handler $1,500 to $3,400
Evaporator coil $1,000 to $4,500

Source: HomeGuide: AC repair cost, byline Aug 22, 2025. The thermostat and contactor ranges come from the same guide's repair table. National ranges, copied as published.

Small parts like a capacitor are cheap. The big three are the compressor, the evaporator coil and the air handler. If you see one of those on the quote, run the tests above.

What replacement costs

For a full breakdown, see our page on AC replacement cost in Plant City. Here's the short version, from national guides.

Sources: HomeGuide: AC replacement cost, byline Jul 25, 2025, checked Nov 2, 2026; Angi: AC replacement cost, updated Oct 22, 2026, checked Nov 2, 2026.

None of these are Plant City prices. Ask each company for a written quote, and make sure they match line by line.

How old is too old?

HomeGuide says new AC systems last 15 to 20 years on average. It lists a system more than 10 to 12 years old as a reason to replace instead of repair. So there's a gap. A 12-year-old unit isn't dead. But it's in the zone where one big repair can tip the choice.

HomeGuide says how long yours lasts depends on install quality, upkeep, how much you use it and the equipment. Regular upkeep matters. Our AC maintenance page covers tune-ups.

If your AC uses R-22

R-22 is an older refrigerant. The EPA says that since 2010, R-22 could be produced or imported only for use in equipment made before Jan 1, 2010. Since 2020, there's been no production or import of R-22 at all.

That's why R-22 gets pricey. HomeGuide lists a recharge at $180 to $600 for R-22, against $100 to $320 for R-410A. Ask the tech which refrigerant your system uses. It's on the data label on the outdoor unit.

A recharge isn't a fix by itself. Fixr says you should only add refrigerant after the leak is fixed. If someone offers to top it off without finding the leak, ask why.

What a new AC has to meet in Florida

Florida is in the Southeast region in the federal efficiency rules. Since Jan 1, 2023, a split-system central AC with a rated cooling capacity under 45,000 Btu/h has to be at least 14.3 SEER2 when it's installed in the Southeast. Larger split systems, at 45,000 Btu/h or more, have a lower minimum of 13.8 SEER2. Other types, like single-package units, follow different tables. Ask the contractor which category your quote falls in.

HomeGuide says new AC units run 20% to 40% more efficiently than 10-year-old models. That's a general claim. How much you'd save depends on how much your AC runs and on your current system. We won't put a dollar figure on it. Ask the contractor to show the rated efficiency of each model they quote.

HomeGuide lists 15 to 16 SEER at $6,700 to $9,300 installed, and 17 to 18 SEER at $7,500 to $10,600. A higher rating costs more up front.

Other signs your AC is wearing out

HomeGuide lists these signs of a failing AC.

One or two of these can come from a small fix. A bunch of them on an old unit points toward replacement. Leaky or poorly sealed ducts can cause some of these too, so ask about the ducts. Our page on ductwork and air quality explains more.

Questions to ask the contractor

FAQ

Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old AC?

Sometimes. If the repair is small and the unit has been reliable, a repair can make sense. Run the 50% and $5,000 tests. Check the warranty, and ask whether the unit uses R-22.

How does the $5,000 rule work?

Multiply the repair estimate by the age of your system in years. If the number is over $5,000, replacing probably makes more financial sense. HomeGuide and Fixr both share it. It's a rule of thumb, not a law.

How long does an AC last?

HomeGuide says new systems average 15 to 20 years. Upkeep, install quality and use all change that.

What's the 50% rule?

If a repair costs at least half of what a new AC would, replacing it is often the better long-term choice. Fixr and HomeGuide both mention it.

Will a new AC in Plant City need a permit?

Most likely, yes. Swapping a single part is on the city's list of work that needs no permit, but installing a whole new unit isn't listed. A quick call to the Building Department will settle it.

Is a license required to install an AC in Florida?

Yes, for paid installation of a central AC. That's the state's rule, per DBPR. Before you sign, check the license number at myfloridalicense.com.

When is the cheapest time to replace an AC?

HomeGuide says late fall and early spring, when contractors tend to discount, with higher prices from May through August. That's a national pattern, not a Florida study.
